Use Your Outside Voice: Acts of Courage at the Board Table

Wednesday, October 24
Time:  1:45 PM to 3:15 PM

Do your board members have to bite so hard their tongues bleed? Do you wish directors had the courage to use their outside voices when someone is behaving badly? Do you yearn to say: "That's operational!", "Did you read the agenda package?", "Your deadline was last meeting." Here's the thing: YOU can be that person. Even boards that look great on paper can be dysfunctional if behaviour is not put in check. We'll explore some common themes that make us mutter under our breath, and find ways to respectfully and safely say what needs to be said. The very thought of this is so uncomfortable for most of us, yet I am convinced we will have fun figuring it out together. Consistent, proper use of our outside voices can be the difference between retaining and attracting quality directors, and in overall board satisfaction and organizational effectiveness.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common situations at the board table that cause us to mutter with our inside voices
  • Explore how to show courage in having (or encouraging) uncomfortable conversations in order to help the organization meet its objectives
  • Discuss how to safely and respectfully use your outside voices when uncomfortable situations arise
